Organic Farming In India
There is a lot of buzz about organic farming lately in India. For the past one year, to be precise since Sep 2018 I have been practicing organic farming in my small piece of agricultural land and when I say a small piece it is really a small piece which measures around quarter an acre which I acquired in Aug 2018. It has been such an amazing journey since then and I am still not out of the learning curve.

This is how it was when I purchased the land...Tomato cultivated in the land when I purchased it. |
I am an author, an NLP Trainer, a corporate trainer and a Family Enrichment Coach by profession but plants have been very much a part of my life since my childhood to be precise again since the age of six. It cannot be classified merely as an interest and I know for sure that it is much more than just "interest". I would put it just somewhere between 'my passion' and 'my life'. So it was an obvious move to take my hobby level, terrace garden to the next level. When I acquired this piece of land, I had made up my mind from day one that no chemical fertilizers or pesticides or herbicides are going to go into this space. I am glad and proud that today, as I write this article, to date (25 Sep 2019) no chemical inputs have been used.

Is organic farming practical?
As far as farming is concerned it is easier said than done, let alone organic farming. The dynamics of working in a farm land is lot different from that of a terrace garden or a small backyard garden. Every day you are presented with a new challenge and every day you need to learn to adapt and that is why I mentioned earlier that I am still not out of the learning curve.
Organic Farming - A Fancy Term
Organic farming is certainly a fancy term. Everyone talks about it but very few get down to doing something along those lines. From my past one year experience, profits in organic farming is highly questionable at least at the scale I am working. However, I am sure with constant exploration and continual tweaking of the approach it is possible to make organic farming profitable. However, my original intention in acquiring a farm land was not to do anything at a commercial scale whatsoever but I saw that even though it is a small piece of land it has tremendous potential as long as I do not mind the sweat and toil.
Organic farming is the way forward! It will become a practical and also profitable approach but with time.
